Writing is key to success in school and beyond. Kaplan's Writing programs focus on three steps to writing success.
- Assess Writing Skills
We start by understanding your child's writing strengths and weaknesses. Your family's Kaplan-certified writing tutor assesses your child's writing for idea development, organization, grammar, word choice and writing style to target challenging areas for instruction. - Target
Strong writers can write well in many genres, but skills in each genre need to be practiced before they can be mastered. That's why your child will focus on each genre of writing in succession, becoming a strong, confident writer in each genre before moving on to the next. - Develop Writing Skills & Writing Style
Studies show that kids learn to write best when they practice the writing process within various time constraints. That's why your child will practice writing in all of the contexts that students are asked to write for school assignments and on the New York state writing test:
- Start-to-finish essay writing and story writing
- Targeted practice exercises
- Timed writing sessions
Kaplan Writing students become strong writers in the following areas:
| Idea Development | • Build brainstorming skills through targeted exercises • Develop and polish ideas during start-to-finish essay writing |
| Organization | • Use listing, diagramming and outlining to organize ideas • Learn to edit sample and personal writing for organization |
| Grammar & Vocab | • Build skills to develop clear and vivid language • Edit independently for grammar, punctuation and spelling |
| Writing Style | • Develop a unique, consistent writing style and voice • Learn to describe circumstances, setting and character traits |
